At Roots to Wrens, our philosophy is rooted in the belief that meaningful learning emerges from deep connections-to the land, to one another, and to ourselves. Our forest school model embraces emergent, play-based, and inquiry-driven learning through all seasons and all weather. We believe that children are capable, curious, and resilient, and our role is to support and nurture that spirit through intentional practices and an inclusive, trauma-informed lens.
We live by a true all-weather philosophy. Rain, snow, or sunshine-our days are spent outdoors immersed in the rhythms of nature. Children climb snowbanks, gather rainwater in buckets, stomp joyfully in puddles, and follow animal tracks through fresh snow. We build cozy shelters from forest materials and read stories under the trees with wool blankets and warm tea. Every season becomes a teacher.
Safety is always our top priority.
In colder months, we monitor windchill and encourage families to layer appropriately with thermal gear. We utilize warm drinks, and movement-based activities to keep children warm.
During extreme weather, we adjust our schedule, seek shaded woodland areas, or transition to our indoor shelter.
Our educators are certified in pediatric first aid and CPR and carry weather monitoring tools, radios, and emergency plans on every outing.
Roots to Wrens was founded with the belief that nature belongs to everyone. Our inclusive programming supports children of all abilities, learning styles, and sensory needs. We practice adaptive strategies that make full participation possible and joyful.
Our staff receive specialized training in:
Universal Design for Learning (UDL)
Trauma-informed care
Sensory integration techniques
Neurodiversity-affirming practices
Responsive Classroom and social-emotional skill building
De-escalation and compassionate behavior supports
We partner closely with families to understand each child’s strengths, challenges, and support needs. Visual schedules, sensory tools, and movement breaks are just some of the ways we create an environment where all children feel safe, seen, and supported.
At Roots to Wrens, we honor the whole child-mind, body, and spirit. Our approach grows from trust, wonder, and the belief that learning is a journey best taken in bare feet, muddy hands, and wild hearts.
